Learn Yoga

YOGA CLOTHES are of prime importance as the everyday clothes we wear are not suitable for doing such exercises as are found in YOGA CLASSES. Yoga clothing needs to be comfortable and stretchy to allow for your body to maintain stretches and positions without restriction.
The fabric the clothes are made from needs to breathe so that you do not get too hot and sticky. Cotton or bamboo material is the best for yoga clothing. Bamboos especially, wicks away perspiration and being anti-bacterial, helps to prevent odour. Yoga clothing comes as long or short pants and tops that can be sleeveless, or have short sleeves for the most comfortable experience. But if you are doing yoga during the cooler months, you need to wear longer sleeved yoga tops to make sure your muscles do not get chilled.
The next most important thing to have when taking yoga classes is a YOGA MAT to sit on. Yoga mats give you protection for the spine and knees. Where you may not be able to sit on a hard floor, a yoga mat you will feel quite comfortable. But what kind of yoga mat is best? Yoga mats are made from a variety of materials and fabrics: -
• PVC. While comfortable the chemical phthalates is added for flexibility. But this is not bonded to the PVC and so may leach out over time.
• Eco Yoga mats are made of foam or latex covered with various materials. Some people are allergic to latex so be aware of what is inside your yoga mat.
• Rubber yoga mats give an excellent place to perform yoga exercises comfortably, although some people are allergic to rubber. It is an eco friendly choice as some have Jute or seagrass covers.
• Wool yoga mats tend to be a bit slippery, with the wool pile often sticking between the toes.
• Cotton yoga mats offer good grip, but may need to go over the top of another one with a little more padding.
Once you have your clothing and mat you will be all set for those yoga classes – but you may want to add a mat bag to your collection for ease of carrying.

For those who are into learning yoga, you will find that there are a few things that you might want to purchase to help you learn yoga and get the proper training. When it comes to the yoga equipment you will want to make sure that you are safe and performing the moves or poses correctly. This means that you will want to go shopping for some yoga equipment. There are a few things that you will need to pick up.
First a foremost, it is important for anyone practicing yoga to have a good mat. Mats come in all shapes and sizes, so you have many choices when making a purchase. Look for a mat that is large enough for you when you are sitting. The mat should be dense, but not to the point where you sink in or wobble while doing your poses. Mats that are lined with non-slide material are your safest bet, as they will protect you even when you are doing more complicated poses. However, make sure that it is washable and many can be cleaned in the machine washer. Remember, yoga is exercise, so wash your mat every few sessions to prevent the spread of bacteria and other germs.
You will also find that there are a number of things that you can buy and use in your daily sessions. Many things can be used to correct your posture. Blocks made especially for yoga students are available in most stores. Made of dense foam, they can be used to help learn specific positions. These are light and strong so that you can easily take them to and from your class. Bolsters can also be used for the same purpose, and although they are heavier, they more easily conform to the shape you need.
Next, you may consider purchasing a bag to carry your equipment. You will find that mats are large and difficult to carry, but there are easily able to be carried when you get some special yoga bags. Again, remember to find a material that is not only durable, but also washable, so that you can prevent the spread of germs.
More advanced yoga students may wish to consider other props to help with stretching and correcting postures. You can also get a yoga sling and hang it from the ceiling. This will help you to do some of the inverted positions. Yoga ropes also come in handy here, and sets of ropes can be mounted to your walls and ceilings to help your posture and flexibility. If you think that they sound overwhelming like your moving too fast, you can also get some sandbags will handles. These can be used to create a bigger stretch when you are doing certain poses.
You will want to purchase some books and videos on yoga so that you can continue to learn the art of yoga when you aren’t in class or if you just want to learn more about yoga in general. When it comes to learning new poses you will find that it is easier if you have an coach or instructor to help and show you the correct way. You will watch videos and books to help with your performance, but they also make great gifts for most yoga students.

Yoga happens to be a type of exercise that many people find to easily fit into their schedule. There are lots of benefits to doing yoga and you’ll feel a lot better about yourself. You will be less stressed, sleep better, and lose some weight. You’ll also become stronger and more flexible. This is a great way for you to bond with your children as well. You will find that it is it just as fun and beneficial for children too. Your child may not be able to do all of the poses; however, you will be able to get the children away from the TV and active.
Your child may not have what it takes to pay attention through a whole session, but you should allow the child to join you and bond and have fun. Children love the different skills they learn, such as balancing, and being upside down is always fun. You may also want to think about allowing the child to put their own spin on yoga. They are young and it is just important that you get them interested in trying new things.
The local yoga class will offer you some tips on how to get your children involved and may also allow you to bring your child with you. In these classes, they will learn much of the same things you learn in a beginner’s class. You may even want to consider brining them to an adult class of yoga if they are of age. However, remember that it may not be appropriate if the class has members of both sexes. It’s a judgment call here, but if your child is yearning to start learning yoga, try your best to include him or her in a class.
Your child will be able to benefit from yoga at home as well. There are books and videos specially made for children and young adults to learn yoga as well as meditation. Always monitor your child to be sure he or she is being safe, and talk to your child’s doctor to be sure the yoga routine is appropriate for your child’s physical well-being. Speak with some of the parents that are in your class and ask them if their child is interested so that you can get a group of children together and show them how to properly get into yoga.
When you do yoga together, you will be able to get to know one another and bond. You will be able to see each other as friends. Yoga is a way for you to add healthy activity to your child’s life. Even if you two don’t stay with the yoga classes or routine at home, you can at least come together and find other ways to include health awareness in your child’s daily life.

Yoga is being practiced all over – there are even classes offered by the local Y or as part of an adult school class. The health benefits of yoga can’t be denied. Practicing yoga on a regular basis can give your health a boost.
What are the health benefits of yoga? Yoga can help improve your posture, encouraging you to stand taller and walk better. This in turn can improve your breathing and create more room for your internal organs to work. If you’re all hunched over, you are pretty much crowding your organs together, compressing your lungs and putting strain on your back. Yoga is so versatile that anytime is a good time for a yoga, whether working late at the office or staying at hom
e with the little ones. Yoga is so simple to do that you can recreate many of the poses and stretches almost anywhere. I’m sure you know of a few folks who use their lunch hour to improve their fitness by working in a bit of exercise to take off those extra pounds.
Many of these fitness seekers also use the lunch hour for yoga. Practicing yoga in the middle of the day may be the break that you need to get through the rest of the afternoon, especially if you have a late night at the office planned or one of those afternoon meetings. A lunch hour fitness routine may also lessen your desire for junk food! Take note of these easy to do yoga poses that are sure to give you that yoga energy you’re looking for.
Checking Email? Breathe – while checking email or typing a long document, remember to breathe slowly, using the stomach muscles and focus your attention on your breath. In fact make the exhale two times longer than the inhale and you will feel a sense of calm.
Waiting for those copies to run? Put your hands on the edge of the copier or table and stand with your feet apart. Slowly drop your head to your chest as you breathe slowly and relax your shoulders. Feel the flow of yoga energy.
At your desk: Lace your fingers behind your head and relax your shoulders. Put on a big smile, inhale deeply and stretch your elbows backward. Release your breath.
Warrior Pose: Raise your arms to the side, pointing your fingers.Take a step to the side, with your right foot out and right knee bent, left leg straight. Keep the torso straight and strong with shoulders relaxed. Breathe and relax into the stretch. Return to the standing position, switch sides!
These simple poses, done with the proper breathing will serve to improve your yoga energy and mental outlook and leave you refreshed to face the rest of the day.

Heart and Lungs
Reducing stress is easy when you use simple breathing exercises. Because breathing is an action of the autonomic nervous system – it happens without you consciously thinking about it. The lungs expand and contract, bringing in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide from body and the bloodstream. When at rest,
your natural breathing patterns is regular, but when your adrenaline kicks as part of the flight or fight response, the body automatically tenses up and the breathing becomes shallow. Imagine during exercise, where the body is under stress – it is common for you to hold your breath unconsciously….and the instructor is always saying…”remember to breathe!”.
As we are holding our breath or are breathing too shallowly for adequate oxygen to get to our brain through the bloodstream, our muscles will tend to stiffen up and our thinking may become muddled. Continue Reading »

There are many people in America today who are trying to lose weight. You’ve seen all the commercials about this pill or that pill that is supposed to help you lose x number of pounds – all you have to do is take six of these pills a day. There are the celebrity diets, the cabbage soup diet, the grapefruit diet, etc. etc. Look on the cover of any magazine in the checkout aisle at the grocery store and nearly every single one of them has a headline about how to lose weight.
What you (and I) need to remember is that in order to lose weight, we have to do two things – increase activity and cut down on calories. We all know that exercise is beneficial, but the thought of getting involved in an hour class that might leave you sweaty and exhausted is a bit of deterrent. Don’t feel that you have to sign up for a miserable exercise program. Try yoga!
Despite your preconception or misconception about yoga, it is exercise. Although some forms of yoga may look easy and relaxing, it does involve some work on your part. However, the good news is, as exercise, yoga can elevate your mood, reduce the occurance and/or the effects of diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. I will also be writing an article later on about how yoga may reduce the risk and/or effects of cancer on the body. Yoga, as exercise, may help maintain a healthy skeletal system and delay the effects of aging. Ok, I know you’re thinking, exercise in general is said to do that, so why are you all excited about yoga for weight loss?
Here are my reasons as to why I think yoga is good for weight loss. Yoga is relaxing, it relieves stress and clears your mind. A lot of us eat because we are stressed or feeling overwhelmed. A relaxing yoga session may keep you from snacking.
A large part of yoga depends on the breath and proper breathing. Learning yoga breathing and practicing it in your everyday life will also help you burn more calories.
Practicing the yoga poses will help you gain more control over your body and become more aware of your physicality and inner power. This may help you take better control of your eating.
Don’t be put off by the fact that you may not be able to achieve or hold every pose that you see. The point is attempting to achieve the pose and to keep trying until you are able to do so. It’s acceptable to modify a position to make it more comfortable or even to release a pose early because it’s a little too much for right now. Great yoga doesn’t happen overnight – it takes regular practice. Think of all the calories you are burning in that downward dog pose.
Lastly, if you are not able to take a class with a certified instructor, there are many yoga for weight loss DVDs that are out there for you use. Try renting a few from NetFlix or Blockbuster to find the one that works best for you. Or pick up a beginner’s yoga book from the book store, grab a towel and get started.

What in the world is power yoga? Power yoga is basically a version of Ashtanga Yoga that is practiced in the west. Beryl Bender Birch, a practitioner of Ashtanga yoga, originated the term Power Yoga. Power Yoga is a series of yoga poses which are done without stopping in between each pose. These movements are done with special breathing techniques which enables the power yoga practitioner to easily move from one pose to another.
Power yoga is not what people usually picture when thinking about traditional yoga. Power yoga is an energetic workout which can be challenging to one’s physical ability as well as to their powers
of concentration. The point of these poses, as is the point of most yoga, is to encourage you to connect to your inner power. One benefits of this type of yoga may also serve to increase your physical endurance.
Power yoga is a combination of at least three different types of yoga: Bikram, Ashtanga and Iyengar. At its core, it’s a modified version of Ashtanga yoga while it also uses the basic poses found in Bikram yoga and it gives special importance to form and alignment just as is done in Iyengar yoga. As you can see, power yoga has influences from many differently yoga types, but it still follows the classical yoga tenets in that it serves to unite the spirit, mind and body. The benefits of power yoga includes increased physical, mental and spiritual powers.
Interestingly enough, just as some football players practiced ballet, power yoga is a good option for training athletes. Yoga increases concentration as well as increased flexibility of the body which may serve to prevent injuries on the field.
Before you begin a regimen which includes this type of yoga, you should always check with a doctor or medical professional to ensure that you are healthy enough. Power yoga is done in a heated room – the better to stretch the muscles and ligaments and to release the toxins from the body through increased sweat. Unlike other forms of yoga, there is no chanting but you definitely will get a workout!

Four types of yoga were discussed in a previous post, ashtanga yoga, iyengar yoga, bikram yoga and viniyoga. In this article, I’d like to discuss a few more types of yoga that you can either purchase a DVD about or take lessons at your local yoga center, YM/YWCA or at evening classes.
Keep in mind that some of these types of yoga are relatively “young” (less than 40 years old) and may be a mix of other, older types of yoga plus a new “twist” the originator may have put on the style.
Kundalini
The kundalini type of yoga is often called the mother of all yoga. This is a very powerful style of yoga as its focus is on the use of breath in conjunction with physical movement. The purpose of this yoga is to release energy in the lower body in order to move it throughout the body. Kundalini yoga uses fast, repetitive movements rather than poses that are held for a long time. In addition this type of yoga often includes chanting.
Anusara
Anusara yoga is a relatively new type of yoga, as it was founded in 1997 by John Friend. Anusara yoga is a combination of physical alignment with a philosophy that looks for the goodness in all people and things. There is an emphasis on creative freedom and individuality.
Kripalu
Kripalu yoga is a style of hatha yoga. This type of yoga focuses on meditation, spritual transformation and physical healing. Practicing this yoga encourages individuals to “look within” for answers instead of depending on external sources for knowledge as well as developing a close, nurturing relationship with your body.
Jivamukti
Jivamukti, much like anusara, is a modern style of yoga derived from the founders David Life and Shron Gannon. Basically, the founders combined their study of ashtanga yoga with a philosophy of how to bring yogic principles out of the studio into the practitioner’s every day life. If you attend a Jivamukti class, be prepared for a healthy workout as well as some chanting.
As you can well see, there are so many different types of yoga – there is something out there for everyone.

There is more than one type of yoga. Although the local class or center may be called a yoga class, in reality there are so many different types of yoga to choose from that a beginner should choose a yoga class based on his/her level of fitness and physical/spiritual goals.
Yoga is a subject that is very interesting to me as I have begun to take classes at the local YMCA. I have listed some of the most common types of yoga and given a brief explanation.
