Types of Yoga – Part One

yoga2There is more than one type of yoga. Although the local class or center may be called a yoga class, in reality there are so many different types of yoga to choose from that a beginner should choose a yoga class based on his/her level of fitness and physical/spiritual goals.

Yoga is a subject that is very interesting to me as I have begun to take classes at the local YMCA. I have listed some of the most common types of yoga and given a brief explanation. You may be able to use this article to guide you in choosing the best type of yoga for you.   Of course, please consult with doctor or other medical professional before beginning any exercise regimen.

Ashtanga Yoga is commonly called “power yoga” because the movements are powerful and flowing.  Ashtanga is a series of poses that may be practiced with a teacher or alone. Some of the  poses/movements in ashtanga yoga include, but are not limited to push ups and lunges.

Practitioners of ashtanga yoga move from one pose to another and the entire beginning series of poses takes from one and one-half to two hours to complete.

Iyengar Yoga is the type of yoga that is focused on attention to detail and to precise body alignment and movements. Iyengar Yoga also uses props such as blocks and straps to assist beginners in achieving the poses comfortably without injury, Iyengar yoga can also be a wise choice for those with back or neck pain.

Bikram Yoga is also known as hot yoga, as the poses and movements are done in a hot room. This type of yoga uses its twenty-six poses to move blood to all parts of the body. Flexiblity is increased as the warmth of the room helps the muscles, ligaments and tissues to stretch.

Finally, viniyoga is the type of yoga that is adapted to each individual – the poses are modified by the teacher to work with the limitations, injuries or issues with the student’s body. This is a highly individualized type of yoga that is teacher directed.

For those who are beginning with yoga, it is important to discuss with the instructor what kind of yoga will be done in the class and how it can be adapted to your personal situation.
