What is Yoga?

What is Yoga?  Yoga is an exercise, involving meditation that was created from Buddhist and Hindu traditions. Although it was originally based in religion, in modern times, there are many who do not indulge in the religious aspect but rather use it because of the great benefits it affords the body and mind. Yoga is full of stretches and strength building poses and movements that burn fat, build muscle and you will definitely see an improvement in flexibility! Combine yoga with heart-pumping exercise and you will be well on your way to a lean, healthy body.

According to tradition, yoga is perceived as a sequence of body movements that are key to restoring the body and mind. Basically, while yoga is not easy to do, its purpose is to actually re-energize your body rather than fatiguing it. Following this, if you decide to undertake yoga in conjunction with any other exercise, be sure to do yoga first, perhaps even using it as “pre-exercise” for your aerobics or weight-lifting regimin. Yoga can warm up the body quickly and effectively.

Yoga is also good for teaching good breathing techniques. Yoga instructors focus not only on the body movements of yoga but the breathing techniques that help focus you and steady the mind. If you apply these focused breathing methods to other parts of your exercise regimen, you may find that you will be able to breathe more deeply and thus energize your brain and body with more oxygen. Eventually, you will find that you will be able to do aerobics and other cardiovascular exercises for much longer, since your breathing is much more efficient.

The art of yoga for fitness, if practiced regularly, can help you become much more flexible, which should cut down on the amount of injuries you might otherwise sustain when you are participating in other sports. Practicing yoga allows you to become more aware of your physical body and thus know its limits.

The safest way to practice yoga is with a certified instructor in a class setting. By practicing with a teacher, you are able to get tips and practice the correct poses. Of course, it is important that you consult with your doctor or other medical professional before you begin practicing yoga for fitness. Otherwise, have fun!
